Fiji Earth Hour 2010 Launch in Sukuna Park, Suva

Earth Hour is a huge international event but underlining it is a simple idea – switch off your lights for one hour on and start thinking more about the effects of energy consumption.

Initiated in Sydney in 2007, WWF SPPO, on the 30th January, launched its EH 2010 campaign - “Going beyond the Hour”-  at Sukuna Park, Suva marking its fourth year in Fiji. EH2010 Fiji was launched by the Minister for Local Government, Housing, Urban Development and the Environment, Colonel Samuela Saumatua.

“By all accounts, the night was fun-filled and successful,” said EH 2010 Coordinator, Ms. Losana McGowan. “There was face painting for the children and mural painting for adults. We wanted to ensure people remained mindful of their safety when switching out lights for Earth Hour which is why the National Fire Authority were a part of the night conducting fire drills with their ‘Smoke House’.”

The campaign has already launched two champions, including Ms. Merewalesi Nailatikau who is the reigning Ms. South Pacific.

A platform now exists for a more proactive approach to combating the negative impacts of climate change having focused on awareness raising over the last 2 years. The ‘Going beyond the Hour’ theme highlights EH 2010’s main objective – to encourage people to take actions that will minimise their carbon footprint beyond the one hour switch off on the night.

It is vital for our continuing prosperity that we re-evaluate the amounts we use and address our dependence on them. Earth Hour aims to encourage people to start thinking about ways in which they can reduce their dependence on fossil fuels.
