turtle populations are on the decline in the Pacific
Fiji boasts four of the seven global sea turtle species. All seven species have been listed as vulnerable to extinction on the IUCN Red List and studies have shown turtle populations are on the decline in the Pacific Region. Much of this is due to human impacts.
The Fiji government was quick in acknowledging this concern by declaring a moratorium banning the harvest of all turtles in Fiji waters in 2004. Despite this, there are reports on the continued harvest of turtle meat for consumption, demonstrating a lack of awareness in regard to the plight of the species and the supporting moratorium.
WWF in the Hibiscus Festival
The Hibiscus Festival is on all this week in Suva and is the city's main public social event for the year, where people from all walks of life convene within Suva for the festivities. This mass gathering is very rare and is thus an opportune time to promote environmental issues.
Hibiscus Queens, Ms Liebling Marlow (1956) and Ms Eta Qereqeretabua (1962) will unveil FINTEL sponsored turtle banners, to launch a series of awareness activities to protect endangered sea turtles during Hibiscus Week. The highlight of the week will be a turtle float during the Hibiscus Parade on which the two queens will be featured, as advocates for greater sea turtle conservation effort throughout the country. The float is being designed by popular artists in Fiji, such as Craig Marlow, Alfred Ralifo and Kylie Anderson.
WWF believes that through the support of our Hibiscus Queens as advocates on this issue, more people will become aware of the need for turtle conservation and be proactive in its protection.
